Welcome to Autumn 2025 – Fire Safety Tips for the Fall Season

Reno, NV (September 22, 2025) – As the leaves turn from green to orange and temperatures begin to drop, Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue reminds you to prepare your home for the colder months ahead. While enjoying the change of seasons, don’t overlook important fire safety measures that can protect your home and family.

Remember to take advantage of TMFR’s Green Waste Collection Program next month. The Fire District’s Curbside Chipping Program is an alternative for seniors and those with disabilities.

Change the Batteries and Test Your Alarms

When you adjust your clocks for Daylight Saving Time, it’s the perfect reminder to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. After replacing the batteries, be sure to test the alarms to ensure they’re working correctly. This is also a good time to check that your fire extinguishers have not expired.

Inspect and Maintain Heating Equipment

Before turning up the heat, make sure your heating systems are safe and ready:

Have your furnace or HVAC system professionally inspected, cleaned, and serviced.

Replace filters with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters.

If you use space heaters, maintain at least three feet of clearance around them, never leave them unattended, and avoid using them to dry clothes or fabrics.

For fireplace users, have your chimney professionally cleaned and inspected, keep flammable items at least three feet away, and use a mesh metal screen for added protection.

Outdoor Fire Risks

Falling leaves and yard debris can create fire hazards:

Create a defensible space, a buffer zone around your home free and clear of dead vegetation, leaves, and other combustible items. Learn more with Living With Fire’s Defensible space guide:

Relocate firewood at least 30 feet from your home and other structures.

Regularly clear leaves, twigs, and debris from around your home.

Clean your roof, gutters, and downspouts.

Never store fuel indoors or in your garage; empty fuel from lawn mowers and other equipment before storing them for winter.

Have a Fire Escape Plan

An emergency can happen at any time – be prepared:

Develop a fire escape plan with at least two exits from each room.

Choose a family meeting spot outside.

Practice escaping your home while staying low to avoid smoke inhalation.
