becoming a TMFR fire fighter

Academies

Before you can become an active-duty firefighter with Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue (TMFR), you need to spend approximately 600 hours in training, over the course of 12 to 14 weeks. Training occurs locally at a fire academy, which is run by dedicated members of TMFR personnel. These individuals have a strong background in training, policies and exemplify our mission, vision and core values.

Firefighting is a highly competitive field, with thousands of applicants applying every year across the country. Firefighting is so competitive, in fact, many applicants obtain EMT or paramedic certification before applying to become a firefighter, making them more desirable to hiring by TMFR.

Our Program

Throughout the academy the recruits are faced with a variety of didactic and technical challenges such as; HAZMAT awareness, swift water awareness, vehicle extrication, firefighter survival, victim rescues, fire suppression and ventilation. Each one of these disciplines has a significant impact with our daily job function.
We at TMFR believe the key to a successful training academy is to establish a strong foundation of our core values that fosters and promotes, integrity, innovation, service, compassion, stewardship and professional excellence.
