Tax History

Sierra Fire Protection District and Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Property Tax Rate Assessment History

Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) and the Sierra Fire Protection District (SFPD) have had a dedicated fire service property tax since their inception.  Since 2000, all the tax increases were for the sustainability and viability of service delivery as a whole, with one single exception:

A property tax rate increase was designated as a special taxing assessment in the amount of $0.0277 per $100 of assessed value for the purchase of a Fire Engine for the Volunteer Fire Department.  This assessment ended in 2000.

In 2008, the Board of Fire Commissioners (BOFC) approved dissolving the SFPD as an NRS 473 Fire District and reorganizing it as an independent Fire District under NRS 474. The transition from a 473-Fire District to a 474-Fire District involved a property tax rate increase from $0.42 per $100 of assessed valuation to $0.52 per $100 of assessed valuation. The increase was placed over all properties within SFPD jurisdiction and was requested to address the following financial strategies.

  • Provide financial stability and long-term viability due to budget shortfalls that would affect staffing levels and service delivery.
  • The creation of a capital equipment replacement plan and funding for fire station rehabilitation.
  • Provide Firefighter Paramedic positions in Verdi to equalize paramedic services throughout the district.

In 2012, TMFPD/SFPD became a standalone district selected from the Fire Service Alternative study and approved by the BOFC.  To ensure the newly formed organization's sustainability, the tax rate for both entities was set at $0.54 per $100 of assessed valuation. In July of that same year, the Washoe County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution levying tax rates for all Washoe County entities for the fiscal year 2012-2013 (July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013).  The resolution encompassed the approval of the tax increase for both SFPD and TMFPD.

Since July 1, 2012, the Fire District/s has had an unchanged property tax rate of $0.54 per $100 of assessed valuation.  This assessed valuation has been unchanged since 2012 and is currently applied equally to all properties within the district and does not vary by neighborhood or location.

There is currently no additional special assessment for fire protection services within Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District.
