Safe Tips for Halloween – Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue

Reno, NV (October 25, 2025) – As Washoe County gears up for a spooky and spirited Halloween, local officials remind residents that some preparation can help make the night safe and fun.

“This Halloween is on a Friday night, and we expect increased trick-or-treat activity,” said Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue Fire Chief Richard Edwards. “Please slow down and watch for pedestrians. The safety of our community is always our top priority.”

Safety Tips from Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue to help families keep safety in mind when decorating or celebrating this Halloween:

Choose flameless options: Instead of real candles in jack-o’-lanterns or along walkways, use battery-operated candles or glow sticks to reduce fire risk.

Check your decorations: Inspect lights, plugs, and cords for frayed wires or damage. Avoid overloading outlets and keep flammable items—like hay, cornstalks, or paper—away from heat sources.

Practice safe setups: Place fog machines and electrical decorations on stable surfaces and away from anything that could burn. Use outdoor-rated cords and protect all connections from moisture.

Stick together: Trick-or-treat in groups, and ensure younger children are accompanied by a responsible adult.

Be visible: Choose bright or reflective costumes, carry flashlights or glow sticks, and use reflective tape on clothing or treat bags.

Stay alert: Walk on sidewalks, cross at crosswalks, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Never dart out from between parked cars.

Costume safety: Avoid masks that block vision—use face paint instead—and pick flame-resistant fabrics.

Inspect your candy: Wait until you’re home to go through all the treats and discard any unwrapped or suspicious-looking items.

Drive carefully: Expect high foot traffic throughout town and use extra caution during trick-or-treat hours.
