PILE BURNING SEASON ENDS APRIL 30 IN TRUCKEE MEADOWS FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT. GREEN WASTE COLLECTION IN MAY

Reno, NV (April 24, 2026) – The final day for open burning in the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District (TMFPD) is April 30, 2026.

Open burning, also known as pile burning, has been permitted since November 2025 for residents within TMFPD. This season reflects a change from previous years, when open burning was limited to a single month in winter and again in early spring. Pile burning involves the controlled burning of cut and stacked vegetation and is an effective way to reduce combustible fuels and improve defensible space.

Residents who are eligible to burn should complete their pile burning, weather permitting, before the end of the month.

Pile burning will be allowed under two conditions:

  1. With a 2025-2026 approved burn permit, when conditions allow. Previous or past burning permits are not valid.
  2. Only if it is a designated permissible burn day by Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District, as indicated here.

Pile burning will be allowed through April 30, 2026, as long as conditions permit and can change at any time.

Pile burning on properties outside of the Truckee Meadows Hydrographic Basin 87 is limited to parcels 1 acre in size or larger. Parcels inside the Truckee Meadows Hydrographic Basin 87 must be 2 acres in size or larger.  After submitting the application online, users will be immediately approved or denied a burn permit based on their property location and parcel size.

SPRING GREEN WASTE COLLECTION

TMFPD will host its annual Spring Green Waste Collection Days for one weekend only, Saturday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3.

Free green waste disposal is the best alternative for creating defensible space and reducing the risk of property damage, injury, and loss of life. Green waste collection allows residents to dispose of their dry and dead vegetation, shrubs, tree branches, and other wildland fuels to encourage the creation of defensible space to protect homes and property from wildfires.

Green Waste Collection will take place beginning at 9am until 4pm, weather permitting, at the following locations (check www.tmfpd.com prior to the event to ensure it has not been canceled due to weather conditions or a Red Flag Warning):

Saturday, May 2:

Silver Lake

Silver Lake Station, 11525 Red Rock Road, Reno

Sunday, May 3:

Washoe Valley

Nevada Division of Forestry Fire Station, 885 Eastlake Blvd, Washoe Valley
